Einstein for Dummies

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

"Dudes, I bought this most excellent book. Its called Einstein for Dummies."

"Way cool…. ah… ain’t reading it make us dummies, dude?"

Ya ya ya, its a lame homie joke, so sue me, try coming up with a joke in 5 minutes… Anyway, some interesting facts from the book. I have just been reading the first few pages, seems to be interesting enough…

1. Einstein was married twice, his college girl friend, Mileva Maric and latter his cousin Elsa Einstein…. Interesting…

2. In 1939, Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt, to let him know that discovery into nuclear fission would also lead to creations of bombs. He also warned that Nazis might develop the atom bomb as well. However he never took part in the creation of the Atom bomb that latter destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

3. A common belief is that Einstein had a learning disability. That belief is very incorrect. He was a top student in school and college, however he often missed classes to study subjects that he liked, which resulted in his bad grades.

4. In 1952, Einstein was offered the presidency of Isreal. Einstein declined the offer…. Smart.

Lady in the Water

My old buddy and I, went to catch M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the water. My friend complained that it was not very realistic. That the lead character, Mr Heep, was too easily drawn into the story and did not show enough doubt to portray a real life situation. He also told me that the US critics had a field day with the movie, critizing it.

I don’t know, but I seemed to enjoy it a lot. Perhaps its just because I like fairy tales. Perhaps its because the plot is very fresh. When people see how illogical the main character is, I see how courages he is. He is able to have a leap of faith in what he believes in and cast aside what people would perceive him as. How selfless he was that he would do what it takes to save a stranger who he barely knows. These are admirable traits to have.  But ultimately, I am convince that it is because the movie gives hope to viewers that everyone can be healed, saved and redeemed, that make me feel that it is a great movie.
